Museum tribute to Harriers' heritage
A SQUAD of ex-Sutton Harriers athletes this week unveiled a special nostalgic exhibition at the World of Glass. Featuring reams of fascinating club memorabilia, From Acorn to Oak, which opened on Tuesday, September 5, will run patrons back to a time when Sutton Harriers always seemed to be a stride ahead in gruelling cross-country slogs. Among the old programmes, clothing, medals and photos on show will be pictures of that special post-war team who won the National Cross Country Championships four times between 1947 and 1951. Ex-Sutton Harrier Ken Wilcock, who has organised the exhibition with former clubmate Allan Moore, said: "We hope to cover all the decades from the early 1900s right up to the present day and the amalgamation of Sutton with St Helens AC." Epic project Sutton Harriers was launched by a group of enthusiasts in 1899, the year Humphrey Bogart was born and the Boer War began. And the club has been on-track ever since. Using a picture of an oak tree on the club badge, their motto soon became 'from the acorn grew the mighty oak'. The World of Glass exhibition will provide a taster of just some of the contents of a forthcoming club history book (1899-1999) that has been meticulously compiled by Ken, Allan and their former clubmates Brian Renshaw, Tom McIntyre, Bert Holland and legendary 91-year-old distance runner Bill McMinnis. And the energetic team are nearing the finishing line on that epic project too! Ken Wilcock added: "The book has been sent off to the publishers and, hopefully, should be out fairly soon." From Acorn to Oak is set to run until Sunday, October 29. To find out more about the exhibition call 08700 11 44 66 or visit the reception desk at the World of Glass.
