Thirty years of Saints news with the St Helens Star
1990s
1990-91
Saints defeated the highly fancied Widnes 19-2 in the Challenge Cup semi to make it through to Wembley again. Tries from Jonathan Griffiths (2) and Hunte sent McClennan's men on their way to the Twin Towers.
There they lost 13-8 to Wigan in a closely fought final. Saints' points came from an Alan Hunte try and two Paul Bishop goals.
1991-92
Saints hammered Wigan 28-16 in the Lancashire Cup semi-final, setting up a date with Rochdale at Wilderspool in the final. Shane Cooper's men triumphed 24-14 over the plucky Hornets, with Saints' tries coming from Veivers (2), Mann (2) and Bishop.
Wigan once again had the edge over Saints, beating them 13-6 in the Challenge Cup quarter final at Knowsley Road and thrashing them 48- 16 in the Premiership Final. Saints led 12-10 at half time but a second half blitz saw Saints off.
Try scorers for Saints were Sullivan (2) and Loughlin. Saints' Regal Trophy hopes were dashed in a 18-10 defeat by Widnes at the semi final stage.
1992-93
Saints were denied the league title by the thickness of the upright. They lost the two-horse championship race to Wigan on points difference after drawing with the Riversiders on Good Friday.
That game was marred by the sickening broken leg injury suffered by Saints prop Kevin Ward. They also lost the Lancashire Cup final to Wigan by the odd point in nine in front of a packed to the rafters Knowsley Road.
But they finished the season off by lifting the Premiership Trophy by stopping Wigan completing a domestic clean sweep. They beat the Riversiders 10-4 in the Old Trafford final with tries coming from Connolly and Loughlin and two drop goals from Gus O'Donnell. Chris Joynt took the Harry Sunderland Award for his man of the match performance.
They added that trophy to the Charity Shield they had taken at the expense of the Riversiders at the beginning of the season.
1993-94
This was a disappointing season for Saints, who finished the league season in a lowly eighth place. Coach Mike McClennan had left the club in December 93 and replaced by Eric Hughes in the new year.
Saints' Challenge Cup campaign ended in 20-8 semi final defeat by an Ellery Hanley inspired Leeds at Wigan.
1994-95
Saints very nearly pulled off a Challenge Cup win at Wigan, drawing 16 all in a thrilling game. A late Bobbie Goulding drop goal attempt just went wide and the chance of a shock win went.
Wigan comfortably won the replay 40-24 with Martin Offiah grabbing a hat-trick. Wigan also knocked Saints out of the Regal Trophy, beating them 24-22 in the quarter-final.
Saints' last hopes of salvaging anything from the season were dashed at Headingley in the Premiership semi final. There they threw away a 20-6 lead to lose 30-26 to a 12 man Leeds, who had had Gary Schofield sent off for referee abuse.
