Field athletes set the tone
St Helens Sutton A.C took second place behind Holmfirth Harriers in the Northern Plate Final held at the Dorothy Hyman Track, Cudworth. It was an excellent day with the club's field event competitors putting the club in the frame from the outset. Steve Knowles cleared 1.85m to win the high jump and later set a personal best 12.08m in the triple jump for second place. Emma McClatchey equalled the club senior pole vault record with 2.40m for second place, took second in the long jump with 4.34m and set a club junior record in the long jump with 25.15m. Holly Keenaghan recording a personal best 9.30m in the triple jump (3rd.) before winning the high jump with 1.45 m. Natalie Mullineux threw the discus 26.59m for 3rd and 20.66m in the hammer, and Vicky Davies made 7.80m in the shot. Ben Fisher won the javelin won the javelin with 55.09m and Richard Atherton the long jump with 6.13m. Phil Robinson took second in the hammer with 31.18m and equalled his best in the pole vault clearing 2.80 m. On the track, Gill Laithwaite was the only ladies winner taking the 3000 m in 10 min.26.75 secs. Gemma Connolly was 3rd in the 1500m in 5 min.10.79s. Julia Eccleston ran the 400m and 800m in 83.26s and 2 min.51.58s. Anna Howard and Rachael Price ran the sprints. For the men, Dave Twigg won the 3000m steeplechase in 10 min. 32.96s, Greg Williams was 3rd in the 5000m in 16 min.45.66s and ran 800m in 2 min.4.71 secs. John Appleton ran 4 min.30.03s in taking third in the 1500m, Ian Hayburn ran 36 min.49.51 secs in the 10,000m. Craig Knight made a welcome return in the100m after injury finishing second in 11.60 secs, and Steve Moran and Ian Cooney ran the other sprints with Greg Williams and Rav Vose tackling the hurdles.
