Recs are going up!

ON a wet Saturday it was a testament to the groundstaff, players, umpires and supporters that allowed St Helens Recs 1st XI to even start their game against Orrell Red Triangle.

Starting at the latest possible time it was always going to be a short match, Orrell won the toss and elected to bat and got off to a reasonable start. Smith batted well reaching 79 not out as the visitors declared on 146 for 4 from 36 overs which left Recs 15 minutes and 20 overs to reach the target.

In reply the Recs top order struggled with only Latham (32) managing to master the bowling.

With the score on 55 for 5 Orrell could sense victory as Jenkins joined Ali at the crease. Recs were always going to chase the target even though the run rate was now above seven an over.

With a mixture of big hitting from Jenkins and cultured stroke play from Ali Recs drew closer to the target.

Going into the last over Recs only needed three runs which they duly got off the second ball to give them their 14th victory of the season.

Ali finished on 45 not out and Jenkins 43 not out. The victory meant that Recs are now guaranteed promotion to the Premier League and with two games left they trail the leaders Hightown by 12 points.

Next week Recs 1st XI cross the border into Wales to play Northop Hall whilst the 2nd XI play hosts to Highfield at Ruskin Drive.
