Echoes of bug cinema
ANOTHER lingering echo from my recent piece about the old Sutton Bug cinema. "Thanks for bringing back Miss Bates", writes Gerald Wroe. "With trusty fireman, big Tom Waring at hand she would stride on to the stage." Miss Bates, in charge of the box office, was a formidable character. "In her all-black outfit, she tried to control the rage of the Saturday afternoon kiddies' matinee crowd, incensed when the main cowboy feature was interrupted by a break in the film thread. "I could just imagine the stress that operator Jim Brunskill was under, in getting that movie rolling again. "And as soon as possible!"
